| With a laptop PC and a camera costing only 50 GBP, users can view high quality video images at up to 90 frames per second - at least three times better than the unaided eye or a normal video camera. Users can view recordings instantly in slow motion or frame by frame, which allows an efficient cycle of coaching (e.g. advice, practice, review, then repeat) with the advantage that both coach and trainee can see exactly what they are doing.
MyPCcam also provides features to aid comprehension such as: slow motion replay, multiple freeze frame display, synchronised side by side comparison (e.g. of pro/ amateur), and repeat replay of small sections (loop round or bounce forwards and backwards). It is also possible to record and replay using two cameras giving two views of the same action. Drawing tools are provided to allow analysis of issues such as stability and alignment.
MyPCCam is best suited to a sport where technique is important and can be practiced from a standing position e.g. golf (swing), tennis (serve, forehand/backhand return), cricket, baseball. It has been designed to make distance coaching easy - so, as well as allowing a person to be self coached, they can send videos to thier coach and recieve feedback and advice in the form of edited video and voice-over. After a session with a professional coach, users can practice as instructed on thier own, with confidence that they are doing so proficiently.
Malcolm Hinsley, former triathlete and the author of the software, says: 'MyPCCam grew out of a sense of frustration with literally years of being stuck with my training. It started as a private project to take underwater video footage of me swimming. Although I thought it would be a simple job to write some video software, it turned out to be a lot more work than expected. But with the help of 30 minutes of the club coach's time, we managed to reach an understanding of one of my errors in technique, agree on a fix, and in two weeks I achieved a 10% increase in efficiency and soon afterwards moved up a lane in the club session.'
He adds: 'MyPCCam is affordably priced to be within the reach of the ordinary sportsperson, not just professional athletes with access to systems costing many thousands of pounds.'
IT-Werken (UK) Ltd is based in NE London and was founded in 2004 to develop and market software products making use of existing established technology. 'Werken' is a German word meaning handicrafts. MyPCCam is the company's first product.
