2007 Varsity Match - Two Warwickshire golfers take part
Pictured are John Gibbons (right) and Simon James taken at Aldeburgh during the Varsity match where they both represented Oxford in this years' annual battle between Oxford & Cambridge. The gorse in the picture is typical of the course and is it's major hazard.

Unfortunately they were on the losing side going down 8-7 in a close fought match which dramatically swung the Cambridge way in the last hour.

Simon had a good 8&6 win over 36 holes on Friday but missed out on a second point on Saturday. John had some bad luck, particularly on Saturday and failed to score. The memories of taking part in this magnificent event will stay with them a lot longer than the score.

This fixture has been played since 1878, seven years before the Amateur Championships was started, so can claim to be the oldest established amateur event in the golfing calendar.

There was great support for this event which attracted about 200-300 spectators including twice President's Putter champion David Hayes proudly wearing his Warwickshire Blazer, and Richard Palmer the President of the EGU.

John and Simon join a long list of Warwickshire golfers who have played in the Varsity match and who thne can enter the President's Putter.
