| Seconds Captain Nick Clifford (and his team) has lots to live up to after years incredible success in leading his team to the Midland League title. He can only lose players to the Firsts after the achievements of last year - playing for a winning team is always in demand and our seconds are such a team plus its the stepping stone to 1sts team golf for the players who want to take the step up to the very highest level.
Nick took his side to play Northants last week, at Northants County a spectacular and very tough course. His side lost the foursomes 2.5 to 3.5 then halved the singles 6-6 so a one point overall loss was still a good result.
Today at Harborne, Nick's first two pairings of Mark Davies & Sam Foster and Chris Doughill & Fred Jewsbury both posted big wins. Pair 3 was the Coventry duo of Ben Bernamont & Dale Middleton and they were five down after seven. Through sheer hard work and some great golf, they got the score back to one down with one to play and the half was achieved when Ben hit a driver into the wind to 10ft at the 18th.
John Taylor & Chris Leonard then lost on the 18th but Captain Nick and Pete Clarke countered that lost point with their own win on the final green.
The singles started with yet another win for Sam Foster at No 1. Mark Davies lost on the 17th before some very gritty golf saw Warwickshire through to sharing the singles and winning this match.
Fred Jewsbury was another who used a driver on the 18th, to make a three and win 2up. Chris Doughill lost before Ben Bernamont shook hands 2up at the last.
The match was sealed with a 3&2 win from John Taylor and two halves from Nick and Dale Middleton.
In the reverse of this match, away at Cosby, County Captain Gareth Jenkins was giving some experience of 1st team golf to a number of players. The morning result was a 3 to 2 win for Warwickshire. The singles result was not so good.
Andy Sullivan beat David Gibson round Gibson's home course and Rory kirwan as a big winner 6&5. Two matches were halved - those of Gareth and Dale Marson. It all added up to a 7-3 score to 'The Foxes' in the singles and an overall match score of Warwickshire 6 Leics 9.
Next week, the pre-season matches culminate in the annual friendly against Somerset, away at Weston-Super-Mare.
