Rhys take U12s with back-nine charge
Warwickshire Young Masters U12s - Stoneleigh Deer Park GC - Thursday 6th April 2007. With eight holes to play, Rhys Lawrence was three shots back from his arch rival the 2006 Young Masters Champion Maxwell Martin. A double bogey at his 10th had opened the gap from one to three shots so Rhys would need his best game to overhaul Max. He produced it.

Rhys is down to 13 handicap, courtesy of a best personal round of 79 at his home club Coventry Hearsall. Max is not far behind (one handicap shot) and has just returned from his pre season 'tune-up' with Scot Cranfield - having to practice a new posture and a change to his grip.

This did not affect Max much over his opening nine of 29 shots, which did include a six (treble bogey).

The Lawrence double bogey opened up a lead for Martin but back cak Rhys with a 7 iron to 4ft and then a five iron to 6ft for two twos which when combined with two Martin double bogeys saw Rhys finish with a 61, two shots ahead of Max whose finishing score was a 63..

Thomas Jones and Daniel Lane both produced 69s. Two shots better (a 67) was Andrew Hooper.

In the 8s and under, that Championship went to Joshua Davenport with a 32 for his nine holes.

The Warwickshire Young Masters is superbly run by Stoneleigh Deer Park, through the team under organiser Jeanette Jackson. The prizes and trophies were presented by the Stoneleigh Club Captain Colin Knapp and all the competitors were welcomed by John Duncombe, President Elect of the Warwickshire Union who are partners to Stoneleigh for this new Championship which is already well established after just two years.
