| Having parred the first, Gareth then hit two wedges close on the 2nd and 3rd to set his round off. There were the odds mistakes but some real class, notably nearly a hole in one at the 11th (but Gareth missed the 2ft putt for the birdie!), getting home in two at both the par fives on the back nine and two putting for birdies, and to cap it all an 8 iron to just 4 inches at the 14th.
'It was a great day, superb conditions', said Gareth, 'I played with Rob Browning who was second (with level par).
'He's one of a number of younger golfers whose scores I have noted from today, for matches and County Coaching. There is one more friendly against BB & O and some of them will get a game in tht match.'
Last weekend Gareth took the team to Weston-Super-Mare for the annual pre-season match against Somerset. Somerset were convincing winners 11-4.
'They beat us fair and square', said Gareth, 'They played very well and it a competitive day. Weston is a link course and in the afternoon the wind was swirling around. Some of our team aren't used to conditions like that but I was impressed with Ben Bernamont.(who was one of just two Warwickshire winners in the singles). Its the first time I have seen him play.'
There were a number of players missing from the Trials, competing elsewhere. One of a number of events from 2006 that was washed out by storms was the Mail Champion of Champions. It was replayed today at Robin Hood and one player (from Warwickshire) dominated the day.
Andy Sullivan opened with a lob wedge to 4ft at the first, the first of five birdie on the day. Andy bogied the 10th and the 11th then got both shots back with a 9iron approach to 10ft, at the par five 12th, for an eagle.
It all added up to a four shot win over the rest of the field, a superb performance and another (huge) trophy for the Sullivan mantelpiece..
