The Magnificent Seventh comes from our Eight
2007 4 Counties - Enville GC - Saturday and Sunday 21st and 22nd April. Winning again and again is tough. The pressures of records become greater as the records grow longer. Six consecutive wins in the four Counties could only serve to inspire our three County competitors to be the team which breaks the record of Warwickshire wins, whilst asking our Junior golfers to match some very impressive past year's performances. 2007 would not be the year to end the record, only to continue it.

Only Sam Dodds was in the winning 2006 team. He led the team all weekend and only lost in the first of the three round-robin matches against Gloucs, Staffs and Worcs, when playing Ollie Glaze from Gloucs.

That loss came about because Glaze almost drove the par four 18th for a winning birdie. Our player in Match 2 was Andy Bate and he halved his match before Rob Bardsley and Dan Baskott took us ahead in the crucial first encounter.

James Smith was our second loss, again on the 18th and despite James having five birdies. How would the Warwickshire 'tail' wag, especially as it included our youngest player Jamie Carney?

With three birdies Jamie halved his match and James Hale and Andy Geraghty were both winners on the 16th. It was a perfect start, a 5-3 win whilst Staffordshire were 4.5 winners over Worcestershire.

Sunday morning and we were up against Worcestershire. Saturday afternoon was a superb come-back by our eight man team, with our juniors having been down for most of the afternoon. This time the tight matches were at the end of each series and Jamie Carney and James Hale both won on the 18th. The overall match score was 7-1 to Warwickshire so with Staffordshire having a very good half with Gloucestershire, the afternoon's final series with Warwickshire taking on Staffordshire would decide the title for 2007.

Our players dominated from the very first hole and we were quickly well ahead in many of the games. Sam Dodds and Andy Bate were both impressive winners, Sam having three birdies in a row in a 7&5 win whilst Andy threw an eagle and three birdies at his opposition. Rob Bardsley was again in Match 3 and completed a very impressive weekend with a third win out of three.

James Smith converted a five up lead into a win on the 17th to seal the weekend after Jamie Carney had also shown himself to be ready for the pressures when he won 6&5. And at the end of the singles, in came another win from the third junior (with Bardsley and Carney) who can play in the 2008 Warwickshire team - Andrew Geraghty with another 100% record.

'It was typical matchplay', said Boys Team Captain John Simpson, 'When we looked like we were struggling (on Saturday afternoon) the resilience of the team came through. This is a very good team. They have shown lots of spirit.'

'I would go as far as to say that this is the strongest performance of the last four years, in which I have been involved. The expectation of a seventh win was a lot for them to deal with. Sam proved he is a very capable Captain and Andrew Geraghty as anchor man was fantastic - it was a superb team performance throughout.'
