'Champs off to slow start'
Mid ? Warwickshire Golf League - Week 1 report - Defending champions Hearsall stuttered in the pursuit of a second consecutive title with a defeat at Leamington by 5? to 2?. J. Goode with a stunning performance for the home side beating S. Foster of Hearsall, who went through the 2006 campaign undefeated. Other winners for Leamington were J. Callender and T. Wilson. L. Mallin and T. Ibbertson gaining wins for Hearsall, the latter by a best of the week 7 & 5. The halved game was between T. James and M. Davies.

Last years runners-up Coventry again got off to a fast start defeating away side Nuneaton by 7 points to 1. M. Cryer, S. Dodds, B. Bernamont, D. Baskott, and D. Middleton also by a best of the week 7 & 5 winning for the home side. B. Read with the solitary point for the visitors.

Purley Chase got their season off to a flyer with a 6.5 - 1.5 victory at home to Atherstone. A. Sullivan, A. Ferraro, R. Evans and M. Haywood with wins for Purley. G. Wilson was the only winner for Atherstone and the halved game was between A. Connelly and S. Butler.

As in 2006, Stoneleigh were beaten at home by Kenilworth, this time by a score of 5.5 to 2.5. M. Woolerton and P. Spittal victorious for Stoneleigh, but wins for R. Kirwan, S. Yates and D. Howe gave Kenilworth the edge. The halved game was between S. Young and B. Hammond.

Local rivals Whitefields and away side Rugby fought out a 4-4 draw. S.Postlethwaite, S. Pryde and C. Odwell gained the points for Whitefields. B. McGovern, N. Lloyd and S. Griffin enabling Rugby to grab a share of the spoils.
