| Our four man team were joined by Thomas Guy, replacing the injured Ben Bernamont, in playing for places for the Top 10 and thus gaining invites to play in the English Schools Championships which will be played at Walsall Golf Club on Monday 25th June.
Warwickshire haven't had a winner of this Championship but this year we will ahve five players in the field - a record.
Ben Bernamont, a past Schoolboy International, will be there as he has been given a wildcard into the field, because of his injury which prevented him playing today at Horsley. The other four places will go to Sam Dodds, James Smith, Dan Baskott and Andy Bate. They all earned their place by filling the four of the first five places in the Boys Individual competition.
Sam opened with a 75. James was two shots worse and Dan also had a 75 but the 'star of the show' (with the equal low round of the day) was Andy Bate with a 70. That was one under par and if you are wondering about the scores, they were high because of Warwickshire's own Peter McEvoy who gave Horsley some Augusta like greens when he designed the course in 1990.
Its in great condition and very welcoming but miss a green in the wrong place and any golfer will struggle.
The 75s from Dodds and Baskott, along with the 70 from Bate all added up to a 220 total and a four shot lead over Leicestershire. Our team never looked back and were never threatened
in the second round.
James Smith had a 70 and when Dan Baskott posted a 72, they were tied for third on 147. Andy Bate could not fire the five birdies he had found in the morning and totaled 148, good enough for T5th.
The 2006 Boys Championship went to Rory Kirwan. It will stay in Warwickshire as Sam Dodds added a 70 to his 75 for a one shot win over James Fox from Staffs.
News of how well the Warwickshire Girls did can be found in the Ladies Section of this site.
The Team title 'came home' by 17 shots and Thomas Guy gained invaluable experience for the next two years when he is sure to figure in team selection. This may not be English County finals but if that elusive English Schools Championship could be won, it would be a great fillip for our Juniors.
