Tough in the Sun
Sunday 10th June 2007 - Boys Midland League matches - Home vs Derbyshire at ingon Manor GC. Your Boys team responded with a gritty 9-7 win against a very solid Derbys team - after the disappointment of losing out at Oswestry two weeks ago. The margin of the win was the smallest but your team are looking to have some sort of consolation for not making the English Finals.

The win as founded around a wag of the tail and a sterling performance by Boys Captain Sam Dodds. Last week, the 2nds played Derbyshire and their team ran ours close, notably with performance of a Junior playing for them a certain Will Harvey being responsible for two of the Derbys points that day.

Sam played with Dan Baskott in the morning, against Bailey and his partner and an eagle and a birdie were good enough for our pairing to win 3&1. Warwickshire lost the next tow foursomme before taking a half in Pair 4 (from the big hitting 'munchers' Phil Wastell and Adam Ferraro) then a win from Chris Freeman and debutante Rob Holland.

The singles didn't look very good at the start - both James Smith and Baskott looked like losing (which they did) Jamie Carney was first to win for our team (comfortably) then Dodds beat Bailey in the singles, taking two points off the bete noir of last week's Senior team.

Adam Ferraro was soon back at the clubhouse having shared with Carney the biggest win of the day so we were ahead.

Our fourth point came from Andrew Geraghty although how he and his opposition played the 17th was at best awful - Andrew had done plenty before that disaster to assure his singles win.

That left two matches were could take as debutante Rob Holland could not repeat his success of the morning in partnership with Chris Freeman.

Freeman was winning and kept his success streak going so it was all down to Phil Wastell. Wastell was dormie two up, lost the 17th to a brilliant Derbys 2 and although he blocked a 'safety' shot to the 18th fairway, his eventual half was all that the team needed.

'It was good to see players fill a couple of gaps', said Team Manager John Simpson, 'It looks like we are not going to rely on points difference to win the league - we just want to win all our matches, however tight they are!'
