GOLF NEWS - British Amateur and Warwickshire Seniors Team
Monday 17th June - There was good new from the first round of the British Amateur Championship 2007 when Andy Sullivan shot a nine birdie 66 to be amongst the leaders for the 64 (and ties) who will go through to the matchplay section this Wednesday. Matt Cryer was five shots further back after a 71 and Russell Heritage on 78 . There was no such good news from your Seniors Team who lost away - against Worcestershire!

Andy is just a couple of shots off the leader in the Qualifying, David Horsley (with a 64) and he could have been leader on his own bar three bogies in what was otherwise a scintillating round of golf.

Andy started his run with birdies at the 3rd, 4th and 5th before a stutter at the 6th. That didn't put him off as he had two more 'red numbers' at the 7th and 8th. There was a par at the 9th then the run of birdies started again. Andy holed good putts on the 10th and 11th, hit it to a foot at the 12th then chipped in on the 13th.

The 16th at St Annes Old has a narrow fairway with thick rough one side and OOB the other - Andy found the rough to take 6. Into the wind at the 17th, he had 190 yards to flag, chose a 7 iron and flew the green. There was no finishing birdie at the par five 18th, something which Matt managed to save his round.

'I'm not happy with my 71', said Matt, 'but when you haven't played for two weeks in the middle of the golf season, what can you expect.'

Matt was in third in the Scottish Amateur two weeks ago, after a 69, when he pushed a disc out of place. He woke the next day and was unable to stand so the last 14 days have been spent recuperating and allowing his back injury to heal.

Like Andy, Matt was under par on the front nine at St Annes Old Links (-3 at the 8th), then bogied the 13th, the 15th and the 16th. A good drive on the 18th was followed by a fatted 3 wood then a pitch to 30ft and a holed put gave him one last birdie.

The result against Worcs was another loss for Warks 10? - 7?. The match went down to the wire with the last match in the afternoon sealing Warwickshire's fate.

The morning results were a win for Warks 3?-2? playing away at Gay Hill where the Greens staff had prepared the course superbly, even going to the trouble of painting the rim of the holes white as on the television.

Mike Payne played his first match for Warwickshire, showing no nerves with a faultless opening drive down the first, won both his morning and afternoon matches.
