Andy finds the 17th too tough,
British Amateur 2007 - Royal Lytham & St Annes - Thursday 21st June - After a stunning performance in the round of 32 against Ben Goddard, Andy Sullivan found the consistency of Spaniard Jorge Campillo too much to handle and succumbed 2&1. It was a sad end to a great week for Andy but he was happy with how well he had done -

'I am really pleased with the -8 for the qualifying,' said Andy, 'and how I played in the first two matches especially.'

The morning round against Goddard was very special. After bogeying the 1st, Andy produced seven birdies from the 4th to win 5&4, and that sort of scoring must have filtered through to Campillo.

Campillo has just returned from the US, where he plays for Indiana University. That was not the reason for him being in America - he was playing in the annual match between US and European players who are at University, the Palmer Cup. That match went to the US by a big margin and Campillo didn't win any of his four matches. He seemed to be making up for that performance with his play at Lytham, notably his 7&6 win which took him through to face Andy.

Over the first six holes, the quality of play was good yet Andy was 3 down because he could not match Campillo on the greens.

Andy grabbed on hole back and then another at the 10th when he holed from 20ft The deficit went back to 2 though when after hitting his drive left at the par five 11th, Andy had to hook his second and didn't make the green, something Campillo did do and two putted for a birdie.

The 12th was halved, the 13th with birdies when Andy had to hole from 10ft to match the three of Campillo.

Campillo made three at the par four 14th. he gave that back when he took five to Andy's four at the next. The lead was only one after Andy hit his approach to 2 inches at the 16th.

The 17th hasn't proved Andy's favorite hole and once again he was a bit unlucky. His tee shot just trickled into a bunker from where Andy could not match the four from Campillo so it was a long journey home, back down the M6, along with favorites Jamie Moul and Lloyd Saltman who also went out in the last 16.

So Andy will be teeing it up for Warwickshire this Saturday. He is though in some fine form -

'This week proved to me that i can play at this level. It was great experience,' he said.

This week will also have the benefit of giving Andy a World Amateur Golf Ranking. Its a new system in its infancy so it sometimes doesn't reflect how good some players really are. It will be a start for Andy who is sure to have caught the eye of selectors and administrators for how well he played.
