| Elizabeth celebrates her 13th birthday this Friday. She already had cause to celebrate with her younger sister Victoria just recently qualifying for the finals of the Wee Wonders Championship at St Andrews later this year. Her win at Thetford could be followed by three more in years to come but sister Victoria might be competition!
Elizabeth opened with an 82, to be two shots back from the lead. That deficit quickly disappeared when Elizabeth followed a birdie with an eagle to be three under par for her second round. A double bogey seven upset that par breaking golf.
It was now a fight between Elizabeth and her playing partner and Elizabeth needed to par in, plus make one late birdie to take the Girls Championship by two. Her second round all added up to a 75, one over par, taking more off her already low handicap.
Jamie has new irons and he showed how good he can be early on reaching two under par before a triple bogey dropped him back to finish on 74, two over par and three back from the lead. Thetford is a long course at near 6800 yards, its par fives though all relatively short and the stretch to finish the front nine a series of 470+ par fours.
Jamie, like Elizabeth, made a move early on in his second round with two birdies. He dropped the odd shot and had to finish with two more birdies for a second round par 72, and then came the long wait for the rest of the field to finish. Jamie was taking the Championship on count-back but there were players in contention so not until the prize giving was Jamie sure of his first English title, signalling the start of another family celebrations.
Jamie and Elizabeth will both now be awarded their first English Caps as they have been selected to play against Wales later this August.
Two other Warwickshire juniors took part in the U16s. They were Hannah McLoughlin and Adam Moran and their scores will be here as soon For both, this was their first taste of a National Championship and both will have gained from the experience. Hannah has a number of years left and Adam has moved up a 'class' of golfer and will now be in contention for Warwickshire teams.
