Dodds delivers again
Warwickshire Boys Championship 2007 - Monday 30th July - Ladbrook Park GC - Sam Dodds has shown some devastating flashes of scoring over the past few weeks. He has yet to put a string of sub par rounds together but when not on top form, he has always managed to keep a score going and today at Ladbrook, he did so with his immaculate short game, administering the coup de grace on the rest of the field by holing his birdie chip at the last to win the Boys by three shots.

In second place was new English Champion Jamie Carney. Jame was a shot back at lunch from Sam and top Ladbrook junior Chris Freeman who both posted level par 71s. In each round, Jamie was consistent from tee to green but could not break 30 putts either time.

Alongside Carney were three other players who are sure to feature in the next year's championships and teams.

Charlie Higgins (Coventry) could not keep up the form of his opening 72 in the final 18 and was T9th after an 80. The other two 72s did have chances of pressurising the lead.

Will Bailey (Walmley) was very much ?there? before two double bogeys in a row on the 5th and 6th dropped him back. He did reply with a birdie at the 7th and finished at +5 after a second round 75.

The final morning 72 was from Phil Wastell. Phil was also very much in touch before a disastrous triple bogey at the par five 7th. Two shots went way left into the trees and three putts followed on the green. That added up to another 75 and his chance gone.

Andy Bate was again Top 10 and one the same score of 149 as Richard Tidman, the latter being the best showing by a Stratford Junior for a few years.

Kenilworth dominated the nett competition and therefore the team championship and they now have a date in the Autumn to take on all the other English Champion clubs.

With Carney playing Faldo like golf, Chris Freeman could not afford the double bogey he had early on in his final round, followed by a single bogey at the next. He fought back with three birdies but the odd dropped shot eventually left him in third place.

Sam did try to give encouragement to the rest of the field, notably when he made a complete mess of the 7th, like Phill Wastell before him. However the chipping and putting which gave him a six stroke win in the Midland Boys just last week was still working well and he cruised home to win with a second level par 71.

Sam now goes to Greetham Valley in September for the Midland Counties Champion of Champions Tournament, hoping for one final individual trophy as a Junior Golfer.
