Seconds Miss out
Midland League 2007 - R3 - Copt Heath GC - Sunday 5th August - Vs Shropshire & Herefordshire - With League leaders Worcestershire losing (quite heavily) at home to Notts, this Sunday's match was a chance to go right back into contention to retain the title won so handsomely in 2006. the result -a draw against visitors Shropshire & Hereford - was not what either side wanted.

We both agreed it wasn't a good result for either of us,' said Second Captain Nick Clifford, referring to his discussions with his opposing number after the match, 'but it was looking pretty grim for most of the afternoon.'

Nick was referring to the fact that from the Top 5 Warwickshire singles, there was only one half a point, and that came in dramatic style, after the teams had shared the foursomes 3-3.

Copt Heath member Sam Hufton (Pictured) was one down playing the last, a short par four. he chose driver from the tee, made the green and then holed the putt for an eagle!'

Then the fight-back started.

Dale Middleton won 5&4, Karl Smith was a 3&2 winner, and then John Taylor took a close match 1up.

There followed two big wins for Warwickshire from Steve Dyson (5&4) and Neville Gardner (6&5) leaving the match hanging on the result of the matches involving Captain Nick Clifford and his 'deputy' Pete Clarke.

Nick had been one up with two to play in his foursomes only for the Shropshire & Hereford opposition to finish birdie birdie and take that match. Nick was himself dormie two down in the singles and made birdie at the 17th but lost on the 18th.

Peter Clarke was one up going to the 17th tee. he unfortunately lost a ball and with everyone gathered round the 18th, faced a four foot putt on the 18th to take that match. Its slid by so that last half a point meant the overall match was tied.

Just as for the 1sts, Warwickshire 2nds now have a very big match against Staffordshire next month.
