Europe 3 - Warwickshire 0, Bainbridge Semis, Seniors miss out
British Boys news from Royal Porthcawl and Bainbridge shield - Five of our best juniors have been battling the elements in South Wales this week, mainly against Continental opposition, and they had a tough time. Warwickshire Boys Captain Sam Dodds did not know how good his German opposition was before they played, the joke that he could be the next Bernhard Langer

BRITISH BOYS

'He's not far off,', said Dodds after losing 3&2, 'He's just 15, off +2 and he was very talented!'

Moor Hall's Andy Bate was two up with three to play before missing each of those last fairways, losing three balls, just lipping out at the 20th to take the match, then losing another ball (and then match) at the 21st.

Ten years ago two Warwickshire Boys found Sergio Garcia too good in the 1997 British Boys. Our 2007entrants have Pyykola, Uebele, Lampert and Kerr-Dineen to look forward to seeing at the top of Tour leaderboards in the coming decade, if they lost this week to a future superstar. On the second day of the 48 hours it took to play the first round, three more of our Juniors went 'into battle', this time one having US opposition.

Dineen has played in the Hilton Head Junior Championship - its a famous course where the MCI Clasic is played on the USPGA Tour (as well as a Carolina Pro event). He beat Robert Bardsley (Moor Hall) on the 18th whilst James Smith and Dan Baskott both succumbed on Porthcawl's 17th.

In dreadful weather at 7am, Bardsley was in control against Dineen but when the sun came out on the back-nine, the US junior came back into the game. James Smith lost to a 'wonder shot' 3 wood into the 17th whilst Baskott held a 1up lead at the 8th only to succumb to five birdies from Pyykola.

You'll notice that Coventry Hearsall could repeat their feat of just three year ago in having both finalists!

ENGLISH SENIORS QUALIFYING

With a 19 shot winning margin, Shropshire & Herefordshire Seniors will go to Rotherham in October to play for the English County Seniors title. Distant runners-up were Leicestershire with a five round total of 382.

Just five shots separated second from fifth and Staffordshire were third in their attempt to repeat last year's success with 386, just one shot ahead of Warwickshire who were in turn a single stroke better than Nottinghamshire.

The highlight of the Shropshire & Herefordshire total was a gross 69 from Basil Griffiths. Griffiths was once a professional and a compatriot of Ian Woosnam in the 2006 Ryder Cup Captain's formative professional years.

Fresh from his recent success in the EGU English Captain's Trophy, Warwickshire?s Peter Holt was the Bears' last counting score with an 80.

It was not Worcestershire's best performance as they finished last with 400.
