Carney takes first Warwickshire Win
Warwickshire Boys U16s - Monday 20th August - Coventry Hearsall GC - Jamie Carney led from start to finish to win his first Boys title but in the end it was much closer than the three stroke margin the scores for the day show. Jamie actually won by those three shots from Sam Teather - who took the U14s last year with a superb final nine - from Jamie. The 'match' was actually between Jamie and this year's Mans Matchplay Champion Michael McCormack.

Jamie and Hearsall Junior Harry Ibbertson lead after nine holes of the first eighteen, at one under par. By the end of that round Jamie had dropped back to level, Harry to one over 71. Sam Teather was seven back on 77, with Michael (playing with Jamie) on 73 and Stratford's James Yearsley on 74.

Harry unfortunately dropped four shots at the end of his first nine of the final eighteen. He would come fourth whilst Yearsley faired worse and would not feature in the prize winners.

Sam Teather made his move with a holed approach over the bunker to the short par four 4th. He added two more birdies during his round of 68 (-2) for a total of 145.

Rob Holland had a 79 in his first round and a second eighteen of 70 pulled him up into fifth, alongside new U14s Champion Nathan Ray.

The Championship seemed 'done and dusted' when McCormack four putted the par three 10th, to go six behind Carney. Then the birdies started.

McCormack hit to 5ft on the 11th, then drove the 13th and two putted for a birdie. He hit another wedge to 10ft on the 14th and having watched Carney three putt the par five 15th (for a six) faced another five footer for a birdie of his own which would reduce the deficit to just one.

That putt slid by and both bogied the 16th. Jamie was never in danger of dropping more than the odd shot and he played the 17th and 18th in par, whilst McCormack double bogeid the 18th.

That gives Jamie a first Warwickshire title, to go with his English Schools U16s. He now plays in the Midland Champion of Champions Tournament this September, looking to follow in last year's U16s champion Robert Bardsley in taking a Midland title, to make up 'the set'.

The Nett prize went to home club player George Davidson with a pair of 69s.
