| The patched-up foursomes pairings (no pair had played with each other before! ) saw Warwickshire going into lunch losing 5 v 1, this was unanimously attributed to the Staffs players adapting better to the tricky condition of the Edgbaston greens (they had unfortunately just been either 'slitted' and heavily top dressed or tyned).
The losses were Paul Harben & Karl Smith narrowly 1 down, Brad Read & Phil Wastall 2 & 1, Andy Geraghty & Dale Middleton 3 & 2, Nev Gardner & Shaun Young 4 & 3 and Chris Leonard & Tom Ibbertson 3 & 2.
The only crumb of comfort came from the Pete Clarke & Ollie Foster pairing who after being 2 down at the turn played some controlled golf down the back 9 holes for a 1 hole victory. Clarke's tee shot at the short 14th to 3ft for birdie and a Staffs 3 putt at the 15th brought them level, Staffs regained their advantage with a drive and two putt birdie at the short par 4 16th. A long tee shot from Foster allowed Clarke to hit the par 5 17th green in two and the lagged 15ft eagle putt from Foster levelled the match again. A fairway splitting drive from Clarke was matched by the approach to 15ft from Foster and with the Staffs pairing in trouble off the tee the putter was not required.
The early singles were shared with a Smith 3 & 1 loss being tempered with Harben's excellent 6 & 5 win against the Staffs captain.
Two Nuneaton players had mixed fortunes Brad Read went home pointless on his return to county golf after losing 5 & 4, whilst clubmate and junior Phil Wastall took a point home on his debut with a hard fought 1 hole win.
Dale Middleton threw 4 back 9 birdies at his opponent but still fell 1 hole short before Maxstoke junior debutant Andy Geraghty succumbed 3 & 2 , this was closely followed by a 4 & 3 win from stalwart Nev Gardner.
Captain for the day Pete Clarke couldn't quite match his morning closing holes win, all square through 14 with never more than 1 hole in it, he birdied the 15th to go 1 up to then be hauled back to all square by his opponents birdie at 16, he then followed his opponent in at 17 for a halved birdies. Again standing on the 18th tee all square, both players matched each other to the green where neither could make the decisive putt with a halved match resulting.
Chris Leonard fought back to lose by only 1 hole after being 3 down with 4 to play and Ollie Foster then carded a 4 & 3 victory to be Warwickshires only 2 point player of the day.
Shaun Young of Stoneleigh Deer Park and 15 year old Hearsall junior Tom Ibbertson both went home with victories under their belts on their debuts. Shaun emphatically 5 & 4 and Tom with an excellent 18th hole winning birdie for 1 up.
The overall match score was therefore a disappointing 10.5 v 7.5 loss. On the positive side the blooding of 3 juniors (where they didn't look out of place), this will be a useful stepping stone in their golfing career and I fully expect to see all of them over the next few years become regulars at this level and above.
