Juniors take three out of four
Midland League Play-offs - Tuesday 16th October - Wollaton Park GC, Nottingham. Having missed out on the single qualification spot for the English Junior County Finals - by some margin after a number of other counties stormed past us and Worcestershire took that top spot - Warwickshire Juniors made sure of every other trophy they could win with one final unbeaten performance against regular rivals Nottinghamshire.

The 4 Counties came in April, then the Midland League South in September. This play-off trophy, between the winners of the West and East Midland Junior Leagues, has been played for since 1991 and Warwickshire now lead with six wins. This win was not easy, as Notts have consistently been at the forefront of Junior and Senior golf, and was based on taking the morning foursomes 3.5 to 1.5.

The only loss was for Will Bailey and Andy Bate, and that despite Bate holing his tee-shot at the 13th - to only reduce their deficit to four. James Hale and James Smith halved, after being three up with four to play whilst there was a first morning point from the season for Captain Sam Dodds and Dan Baskott.

Robert Bardsley had not lost in either a pair or on his own all season long. To be precise, he had never conceded even a half and with a birdie up the 18th, he and Jamie Carney kept that record going.

In the afternoon, there was never any doubt that the 100% record would not be completed as Rob fired five birdie in a 6&5 win to make the gap 3 points. Dodds went one better as he was -6 when he won, a return to the completely dominant form he has shown in singles since the beginning of the year.

Notts took match 3 when despite five birdies Dan Baskott lost on the 18th. We lost Will Bailey's match when he had no luck on the greens and the same was true for James Hale so James Smith's big win 5&4 was welcome. Smith was soon welcoming Andy Bate back to the Warwickshire supporter's party out by the 16th green and 17th tee, Bate having lost a four up lead (after finding lies like that in the picture gallery for the Boys team), then recovered to win on the 17th.

That meant the overall match could not be lost. Andrew Geraghty was at the end of the field, caught out in the heavy rain that started to fall, and he could not push us past the winning post.

With Chris Freeman down, it seemed it would be Jamie Carney who held the key to the win and Jamie duly delivered on the 16th, with a 3&2 victory. AS it was, Freeman remained himself unbeaten when he won the last two holes to halve from being dormie two down.

And would our junior management swap those three trophies for the English Junior Championship - the answer was 'yes' so bring on 2008.
