SERGIO GARCIA GUNNING FOR COMMERCIALBANK QATAR MASTERS
European Ryder Cup Star Looking For First Title in Golf's Booming Middle East Region - Doha (QATAR): Spanish superstar Sergio Garcia will have his sights set on winning his first title on the Middle East's booming golf scene when he competes in the 2008 Commercialbank Qatar Masters at Doha Golf Club from January 24-27.

Few regions in the world can match the Arabian Gulf countries in terms of golf investment and development with Garcia himself even involved in designing a golf course in the region. But it's the Spaniard's talent with a club in his hands and not as a golfing architect that will again be put to the test over the challenging 7,374-yard course in the Qatari capital in Doha.

The world no.13, Garcia returns to Qatar having been one of the star turns at the Commercialbank-sponsored tournament in 2007. And while his top 20 finish included a stunning 67 on the final day, he finished several shots behind champion Retief Goosen.

'Retief played very well in Doha last year and fully deserved to win the tournament,' said Garcia. 'But I enjoyed the course itself as well as the warmth and knowledge of the galleries. The Middle East is certainly a region that has shown commitment to the development of our sport so I am more than happy to be returning to Doha.'

Commercialbank Qatar Masters Tournament Manager Chris Myers believes Garcia's return to Qatar will be welcomed by fans of all ages. 'Everyone involved in the tournament is delighted that Sergio will be joining us again next month,' he said. 'As well as being a superb golfer, he is also a charming young man who took time out from last season?s tournament to host a clinic for many of our junior golfers in Qatar.

'I know they were all thrilled to get personal instructions from a Ryder Cup superstar so I'm sure he'll see a large turnout from his young fan club when he returns to the first tee in 2008.'

Still only 27, Garcia is using the Commercialbank Qatar Masters as his launch pad for the 2008 Ryder Cup season and joins Australian world number six Adam Scott among the big guns quick to confirm their participation in the 11th PGA European Tour event to be staged in the Gulf state.

Since his last appearance in Qatar, Garcia went agonisingly close to lifting one of golf's Majors when he finished runner-up after losing out in a play-off to Ireland?s Padraig Harrington in The 136th Open Championship at Carnoustie. Eight years earlier, had been second to Tiger Woods in the US PGA Championship, while still a teenager.

In his eight years as a pro, Garcia has established himself as one of the top stars on golf's world stage. His enthusiasm for The Ryder Cup Is as well documented as his passion for Real Madrid and his commitment to Qatar cements the status of the Commercialbank Qatar Masters, an event hosted by the Qatar Golf Association (QGA) and the Qatar National Olympic Committee (QNOC).

'Our aim year on year is to have the best available players agree to join us for the Masters,' said Commercialbank Group CEO Andrew Stevens. 'I think the Tour and the players are in agreement that we have made radical steps with the event and made it one of the most professional on the circuit. To keep moving forward, however, we need their ongoing support so I'm delighted to hear that Sergio Garcia is looking forward to joining us again.'
