2008 Warwickshire Annual Junior Meeting
Thursday 14th February - Copt Heath GC - Warwickshire Union President John Stubbings welcomed the delegates to the annual review of the past year and the announcement of plans for 2008, another year of significant success The meeting then started with Chairman of Junior Golf John Jewsbury giving a review of 2007. John firstly thanked the Junior Management Team of Dick Ferry, John Simpson and Antony Gascoigne, for all their hard work and commitment.

John gave details of an unbeaten record in matches for the Boys Team (pictured with President John Stubbings and Boys Team Captain John Simpson in front of all the trophies won by the team in 2007), and whilst being very specific that this was a team success, made note of Boys Captain Sam Dodd's success in leading the team and his Individual successes, together with this year's proposed Boys Captain Robert Bardsley who played in 14 individual matches (6 foursomes and 8 singles) and won every one of them.

John also made mention of Jamie Carney's achievements, and highlighted Jamie and Nathan Ray being selected for EGU Midland Coaching, and how successful this winter?s coaching for 48 boys had been, supplemented by the use of an additional ? 3000 grant from the EGU for top class putting coaching and to develop our counties commitment to U12s golf .

John then moved onto proposals and prospects for 2008. He said the Boys team could be as good, if not a bit better than last years but that this would be dependant on the strength of the opposition. He detailed how we were not as strong at U16s level but that thanks to Club Junior Organisers, the county now has a squad which gives the county a chance of keeping successes going.

John detailed how the coaching program and additional support has been targeted on short game and for team squad players to keep up regular lessons with their or the County teaching Professionals.

The U16s has been merged with the Boys Championships at Shirley in July, to strengthen the field.

Because of changes to the EGU Championship calendar, the qualification fo the English Junior County Champions tournament will now NOT be part of the Warwickshire Boys Championships. It will instead be held in conjunction with the Boys Trials at the end of March. An additional feature is below this article, with specific instructions on how can make a club entry, and that clubs can enter more than one team.

Dick Ferry then spoke about the coaching programmes. He gave more detail on how groups have been structured - the Summer groups with new addition to the County Coaches Stuart Bottrill at Shirley, and how finds from the EGU have been used to support Warwickshire clubs and individuals in becoming new 1st stage coaches after a going through new training courses. There is one place available at the next course at Bromsgrove Driving range at the end of April, subsidised by the EGU grant, on which another Warwickshire person can become qualified. Anyone interested should contact Dick as soon as possible. Dick detailed how our U14s are showing promise.

David Morgan then spoke about the Warwickshire Schools. 2007 saw our boys repeat individual and team success at the Midland Schools, and National success when on the same day Elizabeth Mallet and Jamie Carney took the ESGA U16s titles. Elizabeth and Jamie, along with Sam Dodds, all gained England Caps.

The success of the 2007 Championship format are to be repeated in 2008, the venue the West Midlands GC on 25th March, Entry forms can be found further down this page.

David then went on to outline how successful the 2007 JOM had been, with record entries that no other County can match. 2008 promises to be even better, with more clubs joining and those already registered will be receiving their 2007 juniors lists to ammend ready for 2008.

The first year of the Warwickshire Central League was then detailed. Formed last September, there will be two leagues for this first year. In Zone A will be The Warwickshire, Olton, Copt Heath and Stonebridge. Zone B will be Ladbrook Park, Rob Hood, Shirley and Oakridge. The winners of each zone league will play off at the end of the season. Clubs interested in joining for 2009 should contact Graham Taylor (Ladbrook Park).

The meeting concluded with thanks again from WU President John Stubbings, thanks particularly to all the Club Junior Organisers without whom the County could not then go on to such continued successes.
