Journey Through The Links
With the privilege of reading the majority of new books, it is easy to become nonchalant, but when the subject is links golf, that is entirely another matter. 'Journey Through the Links' is a wonderful addition to the literary world of golf. As a self confessed addict, I read and was able to relive many of the rounds I have played over these fascinating and challenging courses, collected, photographed and described in one beautifully presented book by David Worley.

It is in his own words, it is of coffee table style of very high quality. It is full of first class photographs that portray the majesty, isolation and at times the brutal harshness of the links, particularly in summer. The United Kingdom and Ireland provide the majority of the links courses in the world, and David has played, photographed and written full descriptions of one hundred and fifty five of them. A daunting task that turned into a labour of love.

It is the perfect winter read, but beware, the risk of catching the links bug is great. Once bitten it is difficult to escape.

The book was spawned when Australian David was given a unique fiftieth birthday present by his wife, a ticket for a round of golf at Carnoustie, in May the following year. Thus began his love affair with links golf, and his book was finally produced and written, it was ten years in the making, and over 26000 miles of driving around the coasts, at one time playing 97 courses in ninety days.

The result is an appraisal each of the courses, some brief, some in great detail, starting in the very North of Scotland , travelling down the east coast, to St Andrews and North Berwick, across to the Ayrshire coast including a visit to the island of Islay. Then the trek down the east coast of England for the odd jewel, before the delightful clusters of courses in East Anglia and then Kent. Round the south west of England, Wales and the Lancashire coast before going over to the Emerald Isle.

This is a quality book, well written and presented, with a foreward by Peter Thomson. It is not only a first class reference book, but also a good read, if at times there is a sameness about the comments and the style, and some views I found it difficult to agree with, such as the opening remarks on Pyle & Kenfig golf course. I did find it difficult to leave alone once I started the journey.

The cover describes it as a collectors delight, I can only agree and admire the quality workmanship that has gone into producing this excellent volume. Unreservedly recommended for golfers with a taste for links golf.
