| There was also a superb fourth place for Charlotte Taylor, reflecting the outstanding talent that is being nurtured at Rugby Golf Club.
Charlotte shot a 65, just four shots back from the third place of Joshua Davenport. Stoneleigh's top par three course was playing longer than normal after the heavy rains of the weekend so consistency was a key and Joshua showed it with two nines of 30 and 31. He then proceeded to show everyone else how to putt by winning that indivudal competition with a score of 35.
After nine of the eighteen holes of the par three comeptition that decides the winner of the U12s, Max Martin held a two shot lead after a level par 27 for the first half of the round. It was a case of churning out the pars for Max who end up with only one birdie all day.
Max kept hitting greens (13 out of the 18) and on a few occassions had short putts to increase his advantage - from 8ft on the 5th his ball horse-shoed out before he moved to the last two holes.
Ahead, Stefan was making four birdies to go with the odd dropped shot and he posted a second nine of 30 for a target of 59, which Max would need two bogies to beat.
Max missed from 10ft at the 17th to drop one shot then missed the 18th leaving a chip which ran just past the hole. It was a downhill putt which Max tried to bravely hole only for it to slip five foot past. When the next one lipped out, Max had a double bogey.
Max's mistake was exactly the the same as Roberto Di'Vincenzo back in the 1967 Masters, signing for a score higher than he actually took, a five instead of a four. Even if he had marked down a fbogey on the 17th, the title was Stefans', after playe such as a 3 wood to 6ft at the 173 yard 3rd for one of his four birdies.
Who knows - these three players might be a first three in the full Warwickshire Junior side in just a few years - and a very formidable trio! |
