Abbey makes great start
WLCGA County Championships - Leamington & County Golf Club - Qualifying and Silver Division Medal - 7th May 2008 - With a superb second round of 72, Abbey Gittings will be No 1 qualifier in the defense of her County Championship title.

Abbey opened with a 78, including a double bogey at the 16th, to be one shot off the best morning gross score of 77 from Lisa Barton and last year's Runner-up, Sue Westall. She started the second round with more bogey?s before starting a run of birdies to take her title defense back to level par - red figures on the 7th, the 8th, then a 9 iron to 5ft on the 11th and another great short iron approach to the long par five 14th.

Lisa Barton did not have best day on the greens -

'I couldn't get a put into the hole all day - just one birdie in 36 holes - they all stopped less than an inch from the hole.'

A 77 was followed by an 80, playing the company of Charlotte Dalton who added a 77 to her first round 81.

Hannah Coles put together an 83 and an 82 to make it through, looking for another Championship title to go with the one she won as a 14 year old at Olton - Hannah is soon to be 20!

A few of your best players have decided that 36 holes is too much, and they were probably not wrong on a glorious day when sunscreen was the first thing competitors put into their golf bags. However, Marsh Button (another past Champion) made it through as 5th placed qualifier, despite a treble bogey at the very short 11th, and Sue Westall, who just gets better and better, led the qualifiers after her morning round of 77 in difficult conditions with the wind and tough rough, and also placed high with her 165 total for the 36.
