| Abbey Gittings retained her title with a 3&2 win over Charlotte Dalton, the same score as 2007 and a win compiled in a very similar way - establishing an early lead then eventually halting a come-back with some birdie golf.
It wasn't that Charlotte made mistakes - Abbey went up early with a hard hit wedge from a divot on the 2nd for her first bride, hit a career three wood into the 4th (to 3ft), then chipped and putted at the par five 6th - to be four up playing the 9th.
Both were short right at this tough par four - Charlotte got up and down to take that hole, then saw Abbey just go through the 10th and make bogey. If a chance went begging to get the score back to just one, it was when Charlotte's short iron to the 11th was just that, a bit short. Abbey played very conservatively and was able to make a big two put to go back to three ahead.
Charlotte then rescued the 12th when she missed the green right and after Abbey had bounced out of the hedge on the 13th but still made bogey, Charlotte made a great two putt from the front of the 13th to take that.
Abbey watched Charlotte hit another great shot, her third into the par five 14th, then responded in kind with a perfect stiff armed wedge to 8ft, and sunk another birdie putt.
The win was sealed really on the next, when Abbey produced a sizzling mid-iron which pulled up again close to the flag. Charlotte was short and once again rescued the hole with a brilliant up-and-down but it was now dormie three and when Abbey found the heart of the 16th green, Charlotte could only do the same as the pin was tucked in a treacherous position behind the right hand bunker.
'I didn't think I could do it twice,' said a delighted Abbey, 'I've just played really steady all week. You know that things can happen in matchplay but I managed it!'
Charlotte was philosophical about the loss but pleased at reaching her first final -
She's just playing so steady - the birdie on 14 was the killer - I am pleased though with the way I came back.
Its back to work tomorrow for Charlotte, who has to work all weekend to get time off to play in the English ladies Matchplay next week. And its back on top of the TV for the WLCGA Trophy in the Gittings household!
