| Heavy rain during the preceding 24 hours softened the course, took away any run on the ball and made the shots to the pin difficult to judge. This had little or no effect on Mary Upson (Moor Hall) who carded a nett 69 to win this beautiful little trophy. I hit the ball so well tee to green that I rarely left myself a chip. Mary said. I struggled with the par 3s, not hitting any of them, but made up for it on the par 5s and long par 4s. My putting also helped me out!
Mary was 4 shots clear of both Pat Kirk and Pat Aprile who came in with nett 73s.
The pair both from Shirley GC took away, as prizes, beautiful glass giftware donated by our sponsors, Rudell the Jewellers.
Pat Kirk won the 2nd nett prize with a better back nine than her playing partner and with a bronze division handicap proved that County competitions are not just for silver division players.
Claire Howells, Moor Hall, won the Best Gross prize with a 78 to complete the major prizewinners list.
Lisa Barton (Coventry) won the longest drive and Marsha Button (Nuneaton) nearest the pin.
Robin Hood's Lady Captain, Jane Brennan, together with helpers from her Ladies section ensured that the day ran smoothly and commented "It is always a delight to host a Warwickshire event".
So who is Veronica Anstey?
For those of you don't know, here is a short synopsis.
Veronica Beharrell nee Anstey started playing golf at the age of 17 (back in 1954)and it took her just one year to be selected for the English Girls team; such was her talent for the game.
She won the Warwickshire County Championships 8 times in the ensuing 20 years.
She was a member of the County team that reached the English finals in 1954 and in 1963 when Warwickshire won.
In 1956 she was selected for the 9th Curtis Cup team where GB & Ireland were successful for only the 2nd time.
A serious car accident the following year ultimately meant that she was unable to do full justice to her golfing career and had to limit her golfing commitments.
Veronica went on to be selected as Captain for the Home Internationals team in 1961. She has served on both the County committee the executive committee of the then Midlands Division of ELGA.
Veronica was of the same era as Robin Hood's very own Jean Roles, their names go hand in hand, in the archives of our County records.
Veronica has given much to the game of golf not least the trophy that has been playing for this week.
2009 will see this competition being held at Nuneaton GC on Monday 15th June.
If you have your 2009 diaries already it's a date you can put in straight away!!
