For much of the early afternoon, it looked like there would have to be a play-off, and a five-man one at that, as Robert Owens, Nathan Ray, Adam Lumley, Ryan Wallace and George Allen all posted 76's.

Owens led that quintuple on count-back were there no play-off rule, courtesy of a 3 3 finish (par birdie) at two of Ingon's most notorious holes. Lumley was next with par par (3 4) and whilst Allen, like the other two Ray and Wallace only dropped one shot, his back nine of 40 meant he needed a play-off to have a chance at the title once held by Steve Webster and Paul Broadhurst.

Two players started with very costly sixes and seven - Michael Pell (back in 35 for a 77) and Stephen Upson (a 36 for a 78 which also included a double bogey 6 on the 18th).

So, dressed in 'Tiger' red, Skakel's opening nine of 35 put him firmly in control and that included a six at the 9th. Worse was to come with a seven at the 12th however (and unlike Woods perhaps - at the moment!) Skakel was solid all the way to the finish, having come back with no 'ski legs' from a recent family winter holiday.

It was a first Warwickshire Trophy and a perfect Birthday present for Patrick who is 17 this coming Sunday. Skakel will now be back off 6, having dropped six shots in 2008 and given one back over the winter. It left the five 76s to rue the odd shot dropped or squandered - but they will all be back next year.

The Nett trophy has produced players who have gone on to much greater things gross wise and this year's winner was home club member Sam Whittingham with a 62, beating two on 66 and a whole host of players on 67 and 68.

It was only five years before that the Schools was at Ingon, played in dreadful weather with gales and drenching rain, and Rory Kirwan was the only player to break 80. A certain Josh Bryan, back then even a giant of a young lad, borrowed a brolly and blasted his way round to a similar huge winning margin. Whittingham is in exactly the same mould of being tall and strong as was Bryan, and has two more years to decrease his 16 handicap (at the start of the day!).

The Schools team was a very tight affair, with the winners going forward to the England Schools Team Championship later in the summer. Scoring was very good and Bishop Veasey (in the form of Thomas Jones, Sam Williamson and Monty Foley-Williamson) won through by a single stableford point.

With Skakel's 75, Robert Owens took the runner's up spot, and to go with that prize he was also nearest the pin by a boy at the 17th, taking away more 'goodies' very generously provided by Ingon Manor's Professional Richard Hampton.

The U16s went to Adam Lumley and he will join possibly two others from Warwickshire in the English U16s, if the draw allows spaces to go with his automatic invite as our U16s Champion.

Announced today were the four team members for the Midland Schools at the end of May - the wildcard will be announced after the Boys Trials

The team is Patrick Skakel, James Kerr, Nathan ray and Josh Byran.

Prizes were present by Ingon Manor's new Club Captain and WUGC President John Duncombe and special thanks was given for Ingon's superb hospitality throughout the day.
