| Having not lost more than the odd Junior match, and being well up after nine, Chris Evans (playing with Sam Foster) looked like a ‘banker’ for our first point of the day. A strong Derbyshire fight-back, together with some loose Warks play and the match was lost, 1 down.
Two Maxstoke players, Andy Evans and Ben Stafford, we playing at Match 2 – and they could only manage a half. When Andy Sullivan and Ed hull were beaten, again on the last, we only had half a point. The rest of the morning play was good news.
The Rugby pairing of Neil Taylor and Schools Champion Dale Marson were easy 4&3 winners, and even easier winners were Boys Champion Chris Hazeldine and Rob Browning, inflicting the proverbial ‘dog licence’ on their opposition – match score at lunch 2.5 points apiece.
Chris Evans was obviously wanting to make up for the morning, giving his opponent no chances in a 6&5 win for our first point. He was soon followed back to the clubhouse by Andy Sullivan and the two juniors from Rugby, Marson and Taylor. Match score Warks 6.5 – Derbyshire still 2.5.
The visitors were looking safe for their first point when Sam Foster went three down with just a handful to play but the Derbyshire player was well relieved to run out a 2&1 winner having bounced through the brook at the 17th to make the green. Behind Sam, Ben Stafford went one up at the 17th and then played the 18th perfectly to take us just one point away from victory, a point which soon came with a win out in the County for Ed Hull.
That left just three matches on the course and we lost in matches 5 and 9 whilst Rob Browning had a win taken away at the last when his oppo holed from 15ft for a birdie – final score Warks 9, Derbys 6 – another good win and one which takes us in to the play-off unbeaten, against the very strong Notts side who like us, are looking for consolation for not making it through to the County Finals.
