| The JoM Championship paired up players in current JoM position so Rob Browning played with Chris Evans, Sam Foster and Chris Hazeldine.
Last year Chris completed an unprecidented treble of the Boys, U21s and U21s Matchplay titles. In his last year as a Junior, and as Warwickshire Boys Captain, Chris committed himself to all the County matches and the qualifying for National competitions. His record was very impressive, hardly losing a match and winning the Midland Boys title by a distance. In looking for senior experience (Chris is looking to turn Pro at around 21) Chris missed out the three of the five Majors for Warwickshire Juniors, Championships around which the JoM is based. He could have played as a Guest in the Warwickshire Schools, he missed the Warwickshire Boys and the U21s (and therefore qualifying for the U21s Matchplay) as he was trying his luck in the English Amateur, and in National competitions he learnt a lot but did not make the higher reaches of those respective leaderboards. Had he played in the Championships he missed, he would have been clear of the rest and have his second JoM Title.
Dale Marson started the season very impressively, winning the Warwickshire Schools and making top 3 in the Boys trials. He then went on to be a key part of the Boys team, earning more JoM points, and finished 2003 with Open and Club points to leave himself just under 1800 points behind Evans.
Chris Hazeldine became Boys and U21s Champion with a 5 under par score at Moor Hall. That, together with winning his Club Championship, launched Chris up the JoM. He consolidated his position with Junior Open Points and was just over 2000 points behind Chris Evans.
Rob Browning scored well in a National Championship, was consistent in Warwickshire County event but made his JoM total by scoring nearly 2000 JoM points in Junior Opens, the highest amount in this section of the JoM by a card holder. He was 1995 points behind Chris Evans with the JoM Championship to go.
I can t believe it! I felt yesterday (Friday) I could play well today but I knew that my short game wasn t up to it
so I spent 5 hours yesterday chipping and putting. It was all down to how well Chris played and maybe today wasn t his day. After seven holes I had had only 9 putts and Chris had lipped out 4 times. I knew I had the lead.
Chris Evans was philosophical about losing his title, The JoM is great, it really is. This year wasn t to be. I knew what I had to do and today I just couldn t pull it off. Rob played really well.
My year really started when I won the Handsworth Junior Open. I did well at Coventry and Stoneleigh as well , said Rob, I ve worked much harder this year (on my golf) and I suppose this shows that I have come a long way ... but I can work harder.
Sam Foster - I just had a really bad day
Chris Hazeldine - I was never in touch after starting with two bogies.
Only Jamie Melton (Nuneaton) could birdie the 18th at WMids GC (a very similar hole to the 17th at Sawgrass in the US). Only Chris Hazeldine could birdie the 499 yard par 4 8th.
Rob Browning started birdie, par, bogey - he then had four birdies in a row to turn in 33 - 4 under par. He lead the field by 5 points after nine holes. The worst score he could have shot for the back nine (and still have win the overall JoM) was 11 points - he managed 16 points.
