Warwickshire’s John Mayell completes a Midland hat trick
This year, Warwickshire have dominated Midland individual honours, courtesy of Chris Evans (Midland Boys), Matt Cryer (Midland Closed) and in September, John Mayell from Copt Heath completed the ‘set’ with his win in the Midland Seniors at Torksey GC in Lincolnshire – this is his story.

Having only just reached Senior ranks, one of the most successful County players of the past thirty years Mayell missed out on his first year of playing in the Midland Seniors in 2002 through injury. The same problem caught up with him at this year’s Warwickshire Seniors but he has been making every effort to get himself fitter and stronger so that he can continue to enjoy (and win) at a game that has been his sporting life

There have only been two previous Warwickshire winners of the Midland Championship – John Whitworth and (of course) Ronnie Hiatt. This year, over 130 seniors took on a Torksey course rather like Blackwell at over 6200 yards with very quick greens and some tough pin placements.

John did not manage to have a practise round and drove up from Suffolk the night before. If he was looking for inspiration, it came from going to watch the Walker Cup just a few days before with John Duncombe.

‘I notice the time our guys took over putts and I didn’t rush anything (at Torksey). Although this might suggest a slow play problem, when you are taking 2 hours 30 for nine holes (as they were at the Midland Seniors), one might as well use the time to concentrate on putting.

‘This paid off as I putted really well whilst others suffered on the fast greens.’

Conditions were tough with only 26 out of the 130 competitors managing to break 80. John started with an outward nine of +4, playing conservatively by using his driver only three times – twice on the two par fives.

Coming home, the attention to putting and through continuing his patient play from the tee, John was rewarded with a back nine of –2 for a 73, two over par but one under the CSS for the day of 74, a reflection of how tough the conditions were.

There was one other 73, from John McCallum (Peterborough Milton). It was not good enough because of John’s fine finish to his round giving our player his first (of many) Senior titles.

‘I hope to get fit for next year and play well in the English Seniors to gain a place in the England Seniors team for the Internationals which take place in September. The other three County Seniors events are played much earlier in the Summer so they have some influence on Team selection for England but the Midland takes place after the team has been selected.’

It is ‘one down’ and all to play for as John takes his talents to the Seniors circuit with a bit of help from his physio and regular visits to the gym. Look out for his name here on many occasions next year, both in regional and national events as well as in our own Warwickshire Championship and the matches we play against the other Midland Counties
