Warwickshire Girls ‘Get Together’ for 2004
Every year, Warwickshire Girls gather very early in January for a fun morning’s golf followed by a meeting when the years events are outlined and a new captain is appointed. There is also a trophy awarded for the most improved Junior Golfer.

For 2004, Sylvia Evans, Junior County Organiser, welcomed 18 players to Kenilworth including Lauren Wayte, new Girls Captain from Coventry GC. The youngest player present was Savannah Gittings, aged 10, one of a number of young girls who have lots of potential to emulate Hannah Coles and Felicity Johnson, the ‘stars’ of the past two years.

Sylvia outlined 23 events to be played from 14th April through to Mid October and announced the new Warwickshire Girls Order of Merit, to be played on the same basis as the very successful Boys OoM. A new trophy has been presented by Robin Hood Golf Centre for the Girls OoM and there will be three sections – County Events, Junior Opens and Club Competitions.

Syliva said ‘It the start of a new season and I am looking forward to seeing how our Girls progress, and I am very grateful for the support of the girl’s parents and my little ‘team’ which includes Jane Dennick (Grass Roots Development) and members of the WLCGA executive’.

‘There will be another Fun Open Day for anyone interested in trying Golf which I will announce early in the Season. Alice Young is one such player who came along never having tried the game before – she now has a handicap of 16!’

‘Coaching is also changing this year. We are going to have an Elite Training Squad of the best 12 girls who will be able to go the De Vere Belfry for three seasons of 3 hrs 30 minutes each time, with tuition provided by the Hotel’s top coaches, led by Simon Wordsworth’.

‘The higher handicap golfers will still receive lots of help from Steve Yates, Professional at Kenilworth.’

If you would like to help with running what has become one of England’s most successful Girls Junior Golf sections, please contact Sylvia via the WLCGA Secretary. Your support or any donation of prizes etc would be most appreciated.
