| Ben is a very impressive golfer, who hits lots and lots of greens. His putting has been a weakness but work on the greens throughout last year and over the Winter meant he had a putt on the 16th at Sutton to go –7 and to have a chance at the course record. Stafford missed that putt and bogied the long par three 17th but finished with a solid par four for a 67.
That score beat the 70 from Andy Sullivan, a round which confirmed the Purley Chase star’s recent form – a win at the 2004 Schools and second in the boys Trials. Andy finished off what was about the worst score he could have managed with a 7ft birdie on the last.
It would be some time before either Stafford’s 67 or Sullivan’s 70 would be challenged on what was a perfect day for golf. Scott Cronin (Maxstoke) came in with a 71 closely followed by Richard Cresswell (Sutton) with the same score.
It was Nuneaton golfer Paul Randle who had a chance to overtake the two juniors. He actually had 8 birdies in his round and started birdie, bogey, birdie, bogey. Included in the mistakes was a double. All of this added up to a 70 and 38 points.
One of the stories of the day was from Anthony Gascoigne. Anthony was a Professional up until last year. He hasn’t been too well but since last Spring things have been slowly getting better and now reinstated as an Amateur, with much better health, he is looking forward to restarting what was a pretty impressive Amateur Career, one which showed lots of potential. Today’s round, really his first of the year was a 73, off a one handicap. Anthony collected Ben Stafford’s first prize as ben had to work – to support his golf game now he has left school!
