Nigel Mansell - something about the man and his golf
Nigel Mansell was at the De Vere Belfry last week as the PGA's Guest of Honour for the first Graduation Ceremony for its Diploma Course. He was full of praise for the programme - 'Its an honour to be invited to present awards to the future of the game'. After the ceremony, Mansell took a few moments to talk to us about his own game.

How is your own golf game Nigel - do you have plans for more competition?

My handicap is 0.6 (Mansell owns the very successful Woodbury Park Golf and Country Club in Devon). I am working hard within the game and I love the sport. For the future, I want to try for the Seniors Tour School in Portugal.

What was your favourite golfing experience so far?

It was in Australia, playing with Greg Normam at Koyonga in the early 1980s. There were over 2000 people watching (roughly) - a huge crowd.

What are your views on technology in golf?

As long as it is available, it has to be governed, policed. Its a mistake lengthening the golf course. Courses need to be tighter, to have more bunkers.

If you had your time again, would you like to have become a professional?

You can't kill yourself playing golf. I would have loved to have been a Pro golfer. the worst thing about the game is making a double bogey, or even a treble. Losing the ball is a nightmare!

What do you think of a Golfing University?

Its a great idea. Everyone should keep talking about it. Its very interesting.
