| After experiencing near tropical storms the day before, and a similar forecast for today, we were filled with fears of a total washout. However, although the day dawned with a grey mist, it became progressively brighter and settled into a typical sunny English August afternoon.
The Aylesford course was magnificently presented and showed no signs at all of the deluge it had suffered the day before.
A field of 90 players competed in a better ball format over 18 holes. Three categories of trophies were available to be won which inevitably widened the field. Additionally novelty prizes were to be awarded for a nearest the pin, longest drive and putting competition.
This is one of the prestige events of the WLCGA calendar and this year we have been lucky enough to benefit from the generosity of the magnificent Quinta Do Lago Hotel, in Portugal?s Algarve, who sponsored the event. The three categories supported by trophies together with winners were:
The Summer Salvers: ? these were awarded for the best nett 50 plus combined handicap and were retained by Susie Adams and Pauline Vale ? from Ladbrook Park Golf Club, with a stunning net 65. Runners up were Pat Woodhouse and Rosie Johnson from Henley Golf Club with a nett 69.
The Harthill Jubilee Goblets: ? these were awarded for the best gross score and were won by Sue Westall and Sue Pearse with a magnificent gross score of 66. Sue Westall (WLCGA President) won for the second year running with her new partner Sue.
The Summer Meeting Trophies: ? This was the main event of the day. In a memorable performance they were awarded to Dottie Beanland from Copt Heath Golf Club and Diana Webb from Coventry Golf Club who posted an outstanding nett 61. Runners-up with an excellent score of 64 were our County Captain, Pat Hale and her partner Sue Watson both from Edgbaston Golf Club.
Nearest the pin 10th hole ? Sue Westall (WLCGA President) Copt Heath
Longest Drive ? Irene Allen ? Stratford Oaks
Putting prize ? Sue Jones, Rugby 33 points
The Quinta Do Lago Hotel, gave special recognition to the main category with free long weekends at the hotel for the two winners and also their partners. Amongst the other prizes donated by our friends in the Algarve were golf shirts, caps, towels, tee shakers and a selection of fine liqueurs. These, together with the location and quality of play, made the day one of the most successful and memorable for WLCGA this season.
