Rain and more rain for the Seniors 6s
For the first County6s for Seniors, the heavens opened, lightning was ever present and our Team, lead by Captain John Duncombe, were a very creditable 4th place. The MGU only managed to play this first ever championship between the 10 Midland Counties over 9 holes as it was all that the weather would allow - for John Madden, 18 might have produced a very good score.

Our Team was Keith Turton, Geoff Tatton, John Cryer, John Madden, Mike Dayus and Frank Wallington.

Going into the competition a number of these players had shown some excellent form - Mike Dayus with a 71 at Finham the weekend before, Geoff Tatton with his Senior Championship win and for Frank Wallington, he had played all day on the Sunday for the Bears against the Wighorns, the Worcs Seniors (or not so senior on this occassion)around Blackwell.

With a rain sodden course at Fulford Heath and ever present threats of lightining, the decision was made half way through the afternoon to count the 9 hole scores of each team, with 5 out of the six scores going to give the final team totals.

It was a first win for Notts with Staffordshire second. John Madden was the best individual score with 33 on the front nine.

This year there was only a new trophy to play for. Next year, the winners will go to play off against three other counties from across England, as do the Juniors and 1st teams.

The Seniors also play their first match against the Lancashire Seniors this week at Sutton Coldfield - it will be a good win for John Duncombe's team if we can beat a team selected from 135 clubs across Lancashire!
