| What a difference a week makes. Last Sunday, the Warwickshire 1st Team went down to one of their heaviest defeats in recent years. Last year, Warwickshire Boys blew their chances of the Midland League title with a poor performance against their opposition today, Staffs Boys. This year, it was a record win and in the singles ....
Chairman of Junior Golf, Brian Fish, has a strong squad to pick from. The Boys 10 Counties qualifier was disappointing, a result of a lack of experience, but in the seven weeks since then, the boys side has gained significant honours on an individual basis and the team is playing better than ever, taking that loss (in the 10 Counties) as a learning cue. Chris Evans, Warwickshire Boys Captain, has perhaps acted as a Tiger like figure, raising everyone s standards by showing he never commits less than 100% to his golf.
There was a late withdrawal from the team, a place very ably filled by Ed Hull. In the morning foursomes, he and the less experienced Alex Rodman were comfortable 5&4 winners. Hull then went out and played under par golf to win 8&7 on his debut (probably another record).
Virtually all the Warwickshire players were under par in the singles, the lowest scoring coming from Sam Foster who just two weeks ago lost the England Boys title on countback then went on to play for England School Boys in the European Championship and come away with a 75% win record. Sam was three under in a close contest against Staffs best player, Alex Stevenson. Jak Hamblett thrashed his opponent 6&5 as did Dean Lake.
Chris Evans, a week before the Midland Boys, beat the player who pipped him for the Midland Champion of Champions title last year, Richard Henaughan. Chris s one hole win was the closest margin as Warwickshire dominated the afternoon, having gone into lunch with a one point advantage from the foursomes.
It was excellent golf over what is a noted course where good scoring only comes from good golf. Neil Taylor had four birdies in his singles match and when he returned to the clubhouse, Warwickshire had won nine out of the ten singles and only Rodman was left out the course, two down on the 12th tee.
Having subbed for the Warwickshire 2nd Team for his first County play, and nearly won his singles, Alex must have realised how well the rest of the team were playing and doing as match after match went our way. Not wanting to be the only looser, Rodman was one over par for the front nine but then found excellent form from the 12th onwards, making a birdie at the 15th then hitting a great approach to one of the toughest holes in the region, the 17th for a winning birdie - a 3&1 turn around for a whitewash against the County which has a few times been a spanner in the works for our County.
The 1st Team need a win as convincing as the 13-2 performance of the Boys, away at Beau Desert early next month, if they are to retain their Midland Title. The Boys are homing on a first Midland Championship for four years and will be very hard to beat with a performance like this again.
