A big win for the end of the season
At Morley Hayes Golf Club, on Tuesday 19th October, Warwickshire retained the Midland Junior League title with an excellent performance in some terrible conditions. Having qualified unbeaten again, their opponents were the same as 2003, Nottinghamshire. It promised to be a close match but after a morning foursomes win by 4-1, Warwickshire were very much in the driving seat.

Sam Foster and Jack Sant were easy morning winners 5&4 and there were other points from Ben Stafford playing with Andy Evans and Neil Taylor and Dale Marson (both from Rugby). At No 1 for Warwickshire were Jak Hamblett and Andy Sullivan and they added a further point with a 1 up win.

Only Chris Doughill and Rob Browning lost, on the last green. Browning and Doughill were stalwarts of the Boys team throughout the season. They would play a vital part on the singles. Marson and Taylor had dashed to Morley Hayes from EGU Headquarters at Woodhall Spa where they had been playing in the English County Team Championships. After a very creditable 1st round, the Rugby Team eventually dropped back to a very respectable 10th place.

For Sam Foster, it was his last Junior game. He was playing with someone for whom the last week has been very special. Unhappy with 155 in the Faldo Series finals, Jack Sant has (in the space of just a handful of days) won the Junior Order of Merit Championships with a 68, partnered his father in a club game and shot 64 and then in the singles for this match, beaten his opponent 8&7.

That was a good start to the singles, especially as Jak Hamblett had lost in the first match. Andy Sullivan then comfortably beat England Junior Squad member Tom Oliver 4&3 so the losses in Match 3 (for Ben Stafford) and in Match 4 (for Neil Taylor) were not too disastrous.

It was however getting tighter than soon to retire as Chairman of Warwickshire Junior Golf Brian Fish and his supporters would have wanted.

Sam Foster was always in control of his match and was an easy winner so Warwickshire just needed one more points for the Midland title.

Rob Browning was down for most of his match, not though after the 18th where a 5 wood to just a few feet saw the Junior Order of Merit No 1 put that vital point on the match card. Chris Doughill also added a full point whilst Andy Evans was unbeaten over the day, halving his match.

It was a very successful ‘signing-off’ for Brian Fish who has seen his charges win the last four 4 Counties Championships, the last two Midland Titles and a hatful of Warwickshire Boys have gone on to win England Schoolboy caps. He will be missed.
