Golf Past 50
This is one of five books we have specially reviewed for Christmas 2004 from Human Kinetics. For info on how to win our review copy, look out for the Competitions feature though quite simply, for any golfer over 50 – and really for anyone who wants to play more consistent, better golf – this is a must which can’t wait. It’s an absolutely brilliant book and anyone would enjoy this as a Christmas present … a present anytime!

The European Seniors Tour is now starting to be populated by the stars of the 70s – and soon the 80s. The 70s was a time when US players dominated World Golf and because this book was written by a US author, the majority of demonstrators are US players from that ear – look out for Brian Barnes though. However, any golfer who was playing in the 70s and early 80s will instantly recognize the Tip providers as a caliber of golfer of the highest class – Jim Colbert, Barnes, Bob Murphy, Jim Colbert, David Graham, and Graham Marsh.

There are also two mini sections provided by Hale Irwin, one on long iron play. Considering Irwin is still one of the very best players of any iron, its fantastic advice, hence our view that this book is one any golfer can read.

You usually don’t get this many pictures in a beginner’s book. ‘Golf past 50’ uses high quality photos (and excellent models as required) virtually ever other page. Not only is the image use extensive and superb, the writing and the chapter layout (the actual structure of the book) is just as good. Chapter 2 deals with finding more length after an opener on the basics of the swing. Chapters 3 and 4 start on third of the way through the book and nearly the next third concentrates on the short game – firstly shots around the greens, then putting, including ‘problems’.

There is then some superb writing on Managing the Course and on finding and buying the correct equipment, again so well written that you will be down to your Pro Shop or on the Internet immediately after reading the chapter. To finish are sections on Practicing, including six pages of putting routines that are a must, and advice on Diet and Keeping the game Fun.

The Authors are David Chmiel and Kevin Morris. Chmiel edits the leading Over 50s magazine in the US whilst Morris has brought doctorate knowledge the sport together with his own take on golf features gained with years of magazine writing – the combination is a true partnership as it works so well.

A must for both men and women of any age.
