| Having played golf as a child at Royal Birkdale, Lancashire (where she is still a country member), Sue eventually decided to take the game more seriously. As her son and daughter started school she joined Prestbury Golf Club in Cheshire, put in four cards and was given a handicap of 24.
Her accountant husband was moved to Birmingham and in 1976 Sue joined Ladbrook Park, now with a handicap of 13, where she spent 17 happy years as a member including being Club Champion - ‘a great club with a superb ladies section’. It was due to a further family move in 1979 that she became a member of Edgbaston Golf Club although she did not leave Ladbrook Park until 1993.
As her children grew up she had more time to become involved with County events playing off a single figure handicap. Her first County Championship, was something she did to make up the numbers, but managed to win the Nett prize and qualify for the match play stage. She was then selected to play in the County second team.
Her long association with the Warwickshire committee started in 1986 when she was Captain of the second team for three years, whilst also spending a year as Lady Captain of Ladbrook Park.
She was Warwickshire Captain in 1996/7, and subsequently involved in organising the Centenary celebrations in 2000 including helping to publish the Centenary History of Warwickshire. There followed a term as Warwickshire Representative on the Midlands Committee of ELGA and County Fixture Secretary.
The last two years saw Sue taking a break from the County committee and enjoying a few weeks a year working for the BBC at the professional golf events that they broadcast. On reaching the age of 50 and with a handicap of 4 she has also been competing on the seniors’ circuit both at home and in Europe, the highlight being a member of the English team that won the European Team Championships in Oslo when Pam Large was Captain.
It was last year at the British Seniors Championship being played at South Staffs that Sue Westall asked her in person to consider becoming Lady President.
Sue currently plays off 6 at Edgbaston and last year won the Ladies Club Championship again, marking a 20 year gap between her first victory and this one.
With this background, Sue plays a game of golf that many juniors would aspire to and it’s on the younger part of Warwickshire Ladies golf that Sue would like to put special emphasis during her three years as President.
Good luck and Best Wishes to Sue who sends you all Christmas Greetings and wishes you a very happy and prosperous New Year – especially on the golf course!
