| In 1951, Max Faulkner achieved his life's ambition, winning the Open at Royal Portrush. Way before the style (and colour!) that golfers such as Doug Saunders bought to the game (and now Ian Poulter), before the character of people such as Seve Ballesteros, and nearly half a century before Tiger Woods has bought his own flamboyance and sheer talent to dominate the game of Golf, Max Faulkner took his rightful place as one of the Golfing Greats.
Mr Faulkner played in 5 Ryder Cups and won 16 times in Europe during his career.
He had his own flamboyant style and a cavalier attitude which made him noted as one of the most colourful Golfers in the History of the game. He was one of the first British Professionals to try his luck on the US Tour.
It would be nearly 20 years between Mr Faulkner's win and that of Tony Jacklin and then a similar length of time before Sandy Lyle achieved the same feat. To interview such a sporting champion is rare, and we wanted to ask about all of his career and if he would reflect on the changes in everyday life he has seen through his incredible 84 years.
This is our interview. We gave Mr Faulkner a 'modern' interview style of two associated names on which he could comment about one or both or neither.
This was what he said -
The Beverley Sisters | The Spice Girls
The Beverley Sisters sang properly. I can't stand this modern music. Its like hitting a dustbin with a golf Club. There was Ann Shelton, a wonderful voice. She used to follow me playing golf in America.
The Mini | The Beetle.
My wife had two minis, One of them was red and we used to go to Banbury in it.
Wonderful cars they were!
Max Faulkner | Henry Cotton
Henry was a wonderful chap. I was his playing assistant from 1947-49. He took me to Monte Carlo to teach and his wife Toots was wonderful as well - she used to call me 'The Personality Kid'
Bing Crosby | Bob Hope
Bing Crosby followed me at Pebble Beach in 1952 when I was playing in the National Pro-Am. I shot 72 in a gale and they sent me a map of the course with a message congratulating me on my round!
Sam Snead | Ben Hogan
I didn't like either - you couldn't get an egg cup of smiles from them in a week!
Jack Nicklaus | Tiger Woods
It defeats me how much Nicklaus won with his 'flying elbow' - it is incredible. Tiger Woods has a wonderful swing, probably the best I've seen, but its his putting which is fabulous. Whenever I turn on the television and I see him he is holing putts - from 10 ft, 20ft - I never see him miss
Dunlop 65 | Titleist PRO V
I won my Open with a Dunlop. It had 65 lbs pressure and if I squeezed it I would make a slight impression. It was a ball that would run further.
Wentworth | Sunningdale
They are both very good. I won the Masters two months after the Open at Wentworth shooting 67 in one round. There were two Dunlop titles at Sunningdale. I broke the course record on the New Course twice - a 67 then a 65.
Wimbledon | Royal Ascot
I've never been to either
Rolls Royce | Bentley
I've had both and they are both as good as each other
Champagne | Caviar
Caviar, by a mile - I don't drink
Irons | Woods
I won a driving competition at Sunningdale with one 306 yards. There was one at Bournemouth of 296 yards and another at Brighton which was 285 yards but that was slightly uphill and into the wind.
A Pub | A Restaurant
I suppose a bit of both although I only take my wife to my local pub once a month - we have a damm good time, big steaks and I have a pint of Beer.
Breakfast TV News | Newspaper
I don't watch breakfast TV and I don't really read a newspaper. I look at the headlines and at the sport - and I check the weather forecast and the lottery. Since I gave up the ciggies, I have a 'flutter' every week - I won £4500 three years ago but I've probably given it all back now.
Chipping | Pitching
Didn't like either
One iron | Three Wood
I was good with both
Red Wine | White Wine
I don't drink wine
Fish | Meat
Both are lovely. I used to catch Sea Bass - it was wonderful
Lee Trevino | Gary Player
Both are great golfers and people. I played with both many times. I met Lee Trevino in El Paso - he sometimes talks to much though. Gary Player is a very strong sort of bloke, very strong.
Captains | Secretaries
Captains were always very nice. Secretaries - very dodgy. I've lots of stories I could tell about them.
Trains | Planes
I had to use both. I have travelled around the World several times. In my day the planes didn't go that fast -they were Constellations, Argonauts and Stratocruisers - when they broke down you could wait days for spares or a new plane to arrive.
Autographs | Pictures
I don't mind either
Foursomes | Four balls
Oh, foursomes best - you had to be a good team to play well.
What are your main recollections of the round of your life, the final round of the 1951 Open?
I had a putt of 1ft 6 inches. The hole went so small and the ball became so big but winning the Open was all I had ever wanted.
Did you have another chance to win the Open?
I was second the next year but my heart wasn't in it. I had a 4 ft putt which missed by inches - it was terrible.
Mr Faulkner played not only in the Pro-Am but also in the British Short Course Championships themselves, an event he had played in back in the 50's with all the great players of that time. Over the three days he was interviewed for TV and played a full part in the hospitality for the Corporate Guests. His grandson caddied during his golf, his wife and son supported him throughout.
If he was playing his best golf now, he would be one of the superstars of any Tour. It was a great pleasure to interview a man of his stature.
