An Overview of the County Championship Events by Beth Towers Its almost the end of the season and much of the team action has taken place for Warwickshire s First Team. Our players have now gone on to compete on an individual basis up and down the country and abroad. The event that confirmed squad selection was the County Championships held in May at Nuneaton. 3 days of high quality golf began with a 36 hole scratch qualifier.
Regional Finals of the Ladies Sub-divisional County Championships
played at Woodbridge GC on 18th-20th June 2002 Day 1. For the first match of the Regional Finals of the Ladies Sub-divisional County Championships played over the beautiful links of Woodbridge golf club, Warwickshire faced last years finalists Leicestershire, a team who have a history of success in the event.
2002 - County Week - Day 3
DAY 3 - For Warwickshire to win County Week, the result of the other match between Staffordshire and Derbyshire would have to be a draw plus our team needed to win convincingly - by 4 points. The first part of the equation was always a possibility with 3 draws already having happened in the two previous days. When Warwickshire won the foursomes against Worecestershire 3-0, the second could be achieved.
County Week - 2002 - Day 2
DAY 2 - The day started rainy and overcast and stayed that way until the final holes of the afternoon singles. It would be a day when one team made a significant move towards qualification to the Regional section of the championship, but two other sides remained in with a good chance of topping the table.
2002 County Week Stage 1 - Kenilworth
With wondrous preparation and Championship efficiency, Warwickshire County Ladies Golf Association prepared to host the first of the new County Weeks for Warwickshire, Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire. The host club was Kenilworth who offered every assistance and hospitality and a course suitably prepared for what will be the peak of each Counties First Team commitment each year.
