Ernie Els, World No 2 on Sunday as long as he reaches the Final of the 2004 HSBC World Matchplay Championships, is the subject of a tug-of-war over his decision to be a World Golfer and the commercial demands of the US Tour, in a situation reminiscent of both that for Els and the European Tour a few years ago and the wranglings over Seve Ballesteros at his peak in the early 80s.

The 2004 HSBC World Match Play Championship draw has been confirmed with some fascinating first round matches as follows - highlights In Match 2 – K J Choi takes on Angel Cabrera and in Match 3 its Padriag Harrington vs Chris Riley. The last match has World No 1 Vijay Singh playing this year’s European Team Ryder Cup Captain Bernard Langer but the highlight must be Open Champion Todd Hamilton vs our own Lee Westwood.
