I doubt if any of the readers of this article will have heard of Titanic Thompson, but in the days when professional golfers did not earn massive amounts of money, the opportunist used his wits to survive. American Titanic, born in Little Rock in 1893 as Alvin C Thompson, was probably one of the most famous gamblers, he was a legend of the fairways from the twenties will into the fifties. He toured the country making bets and issuing challenges to whoever would take them.
