I doubt if any of the readers of this article will have heard of Titanic Thompson, but in the days when professional golfers did not earn massive amounts of money, the opportunist used his wits to survive. Some of them were gamblers of one form or another, from the earliest days they made challenge matches and then had large side bets. American Titanic, born in Little Rock in 1893 as Alvin C Thompson, was probably one of the most famous gamblers, he was a legend of the fairways from the twenties will into the fifties. He toured the country making bets and issuing challenges to whoever would take them.
