Steve Webster wins the inaugural Portuguese Masters on Sunday 21st October 2007 - For Terry Webster it was a wonderful week to remember after the sadness and stress of losing his wife Val to cancer last May. It was the week in October when his 32-year-old son Steve won the Portugal Masters at Victoria Clube de Golfe in such convincing style, his second success in his 11 years on the European Tour.

| Following the sad announcement this week from Seve Ballesteros that he will be retiring from golf, ESPN Classic is proud to announce it has scheduled a special documentary exploring the impact this wonderful player had on the sport throughout his career. The Champions Story: Seve Ballesteros will be shown on ESPN Classic (Sky Channel 442) on Thursday, 19th July at midnight, Saturday, 21st July at 10am, and Tuesday 24th July at 7pm.  |

I doubt if any of the readers of this article will have heard of Titanic Thompson, but in the days when professional golfers did not earn massive amounts of money, the opportunist used his wits to survive. Some of them were gamblers of one form or another, from the earliest days they made challenge matches and then had large side bets. American Titanic, born in Little Rock in 1893 as Alvin C Thompson, was probably one of the most famous gamblers, he was a legend of the fairways from the twenties will into the fifties. He toured the country making bets and issuing challenges to whoever would take them.

An Unsung Hero gets special recognition |
| One of golf's unsung heroes has been elected a Life Member of the PGA.
Doug Smith, both a past chairman and captain of the PGA, and also a founding father of modern PGA training, was honoured at this week's PGA Annual General Meeting at its Belfry headquarters. The accolade reflects Doug's outstanding contribution to golf over a 50 year association with the PGA which began when he was an assistant to his father Jack at Crosland Heath in Huddersfield.
