The 2004 HSBC World Matchplay Championship Preview |
Ernie Els, World No 2 on Sunday as long as he reaches the Final of the 2004 HSBC World Matchplay Championships, is the subject of a tug-of-war over his decision to be a World Golfer and the commercial demands of the US Tour, in a situation reminiscent of both that for Els and the European Tour a few years ago and the wranglings over Seve Ballesteros at his peak in the early 80s. |

The HSBC World Matchplay Final - a Local Derby |
| From the first days of this Championship, when Palmer and Co used to (be able to) drive out to Wentworth from Central London, to the later special package of a Mansion, Butler and maid, there had never been a local Derby like this one. Els and Bjorn live on the Wentworth estate and are very much in the same social circle. They know each other well. |

Bring on the seeds and the excitement |
If yesterday was a struggle, with a stiff wind and generally tough conditions, the start of the quarter finals was much more like it in terms of some excellent golf and putting reputations on the line

The HSBC World Matchplay Day 1 |
| Lovely day, lovely golf from Chad Campbell. Campbell lists Hunting as his special interests and he made the perfect start against Freddie Jacobsen, a quarry who the American would have known was of the tough breed of golfer, the sort of player who makes the most of every round he plays. Birdie, birdie, eagle was good enough for three up after four and despite a 6 at the 8th, Campbell was 5 up after 10 and looking in control. |
