30 players were within 7 shots of the lead as they each made there way to the 1st tee of a glorious and difficult Wentworth West Course. Take away the –5s, one of whom would need a 63 to have a chance of the final PGA title under the auspices of Volvo, and there were still 20 players for whom the most prestigious European Tour title would find top billing on their CV. It was past England Boys Captain Scott Drummond who took his chance, the man many felt was the outsider.

Did the winner of the 50th PGA Championship, the 1000th European Tour event, did Scott Drummond know that he had two putts to win the huge silver trophy and £420 000? The answer - no - because Drummond never looked at a scoreboard. This and lots more came out at a very entertaining press conference from the man who has two psychologists ….

Over a very well set-up and prepared Ladbrook Park golf course, a field of 80 of Warwickshire’s best contested the 2004 Amateur Championship trying to win the most prestigious title the County has …. and one Matt Cryer (Coventry) had been waiting for (and wanting) for a long time. As the best handicap in the County (and part of the England Teams set-up), Matt was the favourite and after an opening 68 he was in great position to take his first Amateur.

Over the weekend three of our Country Seniors and Juniors were involved in major golf events, notably the Brabazon (the English Strokeplay Championship) and the Beau Desert Stag. It was Rob Browning, Boys Trials Champion, who came home with the Silverwear.
