Rumford strolls to victory by four shots
DROGHEDA, Ireland - Brett Rumford grew up playing in the wind in his birthplace of Perth, Australia and the experience helped him land the Irish Open title at Baltray on Sunday. Rumford, 27 on Tuesday, fired a five-under closing round of 67 to win by four strokes and became the first Australian in 54 years to take the title. Three successive birdies from the second thrust the Australian ahead of countryman Peter Lonard and into a lead he never relinquished, despite a brave attempt by Padraig Harrington that hauled the Irish hope within one stroke early in the round.
The 2004 Ryder Cup - Langer speaks on the weekend's events
With significant column inches covering all the back pages of the National newspapers about Bernard Langer not being at the Open to meet up with prospective European Team members, as was his US counterpart Hal Sutton, Langer has issued a press statement which is given in full in this feature. Its a very positive response and before you consider what he has said, the Ryder Cup will be reported on HERE every night, direct from the course, by a top golf writer - details to follow with lots of features for Summer golf
Winning Dads at the Mobile Cup
Its Seniors day all across Oxfordshire. At the north of the County is the Banbury Run, a rally for motorcycles of more ‘senior’ years. One by one they file out from the start, spluttering oil into the skies and onto the roads. The rider of 197 obviously had been practicing balancing himself against a faulty spring somewhere on his suspension. Coupled with that piece of skill was a constant fiddling with his carburettor to keep his machine going.
The 2004 Volvo PGA – Final round – Great Scott!
30 players were within 7 shots of the lead as they each made there way to the 1st tee of a glorious and difficult Wentworth West Course. Take away the –5s, one of whom would need a 63 to have a chance of the final PGA title under the auspices of Volvo, and there were still 20 players for whom the most prestigious European Tour title would find top billing on their CV. It was past England Boys Captain Scott Drummond who took his chance, the man many felt was the outsider.
Webster enjoys a rare weekend of competitin
VIRGINIA WATER, England - When you have missed eight cuts in your last 12 events, to survive into the weekend feels almost like a privilege. Steve Webster is trying to make the most of it despite his relative unfamiliarity with the situation but his one-over-par 73 in the third round of the Volvo PGA at Wentworth Saturday was not what he wanted after his earlier efforts of 71 and 69.
The Volvo PGA – Day 2 – Sleeping Justin awakes
Another perfect day gave Steve Webster the course to himself as he was first off around 7am. Accompanied by Padraig Harrington’s ex caddy, Dave McNally, Steve has a new work ethic for his putting, to go with using the claw technique. In 30 minute sessions, Steve has spent four and half hours on the Wentworth putting green since Tuesday and today’s 69 was all about his putting as his tee to green game was not as good as in his opening 71.
