4th March 2005 – This editorial covers three bits of news from ELGA, for this week’s Spanish Ladies Open (in which Fliss Johnson is playing), a new sponsor for the ELGA Order of Merit (which Fliss won the Girls section last year), and the new Captains for ELGA teams for 2005 (Unfortunately Fliss isn’t quite old enough to be considered so she doesn’t feature here!).
ENGLISH GOLF RECEIVES £8 MILLION BOOST
Golf has won the government’s backing with the announcement today from Sport England that it is to receive an £8 million boost over the next four years for the development of the game. The 88 per cent increase of its annual grant to £2 million represents a major leap forward for the England Golf Partnership, which is planning to increase the number of individuals playing golf by 10% by 2009 and grow the active members of affiliated clubs by 50,000.
SPORT ENGLAND ANNOUNCES £315m INVESTMENT INTO SPORT
WITH £9m GOING INTO GOLF as part of a four-year funding plan to boost participation and international success Sport England, the strategic lead for sport in England, today announced its four-year funding, totalling some £315 million for 32 priority and development sports in England.
