Kirwan's charge falls just short
Midland Boys 2006 - Maxstoke Park GC - Thursday 20th July. Five back from the morning lead, Rory Kirwan mounted a spectacular charge to try and bring the Midland Boys Trophy back to Warwickshire for the first time in four years. Rory was one of three players on the day who produced the sort of scoring that makes a top professional, in search of the most prestigious Boys Championship in the Midlands - and Rory would rue the shortest par fours on Maxstoke's links.
More Junior success and news on the JOM
At the English Schools U16s Championship, at Chevin GC on Monday 17th July, three Shirley Juniors made their first appearance in this Championship - and they did very well. Thomas Guy and Jamie Carney made Top 20 on what was one of hottest days ever for golf, even up in the Derbyshire mountains! Chevin is a very good course, undulating more than most, and two rounds under 80 are the sign of some excellent golf which both Thomas and Jamie achieved.
Results from the two Warwickshire Union Centenary Am-Ams
This feature includes PDFs of both Centenary Am-Ams - congratulations to Bramcote Waters (at Walmley) and to Stratford-on-Avon (Leamington) and thanks go to both host clubs for their hospitality. The final event of the special Centenary golfing programme for Warwickshire clubs will be held at Harborne on 18th August - the Fourball Alliance.
Centenary Am-Am South - Another superb day!
Leamington & County GC - Wednesday 12th July 2006 - After the success of the Centenary Am-Am North two weeks ago at Walmley, perfect weather conditions welcomed the 25 clubs who were taking part in the second of these special events to celebrate the Centenary of the Union. The Leamington Course was perfectly prepared and the food just as good. It was also the first time that Stratford-on-Avon has appeared as a winning club on this site!
What a difference a sandwich makes
Midland League 2006 Sutton Coldfield GC - Sunday 9th July - 1sts vs Derbyshire PLUS 2nds away at Chevin AND Juniors vs Staffordshire - After a disastrous morning when Matt Cryer and David Hayes scraped home with a 1up win, the next three matches featured lots of indifferent Warwickshire golf and only Andy Sullivan & County Champion Ben Stafford were respectable winners, the 1st team lunched 2-3 down, much the same score as at Chevin where the 2nds were 2-4 behind.
Golf News - Warwickshire players doing really well.
Most Juniors aspire to become professionals from the moment they start to play the game with any sort of talent but at an early age, some attract lots of attention. Sam Walker was one such player and on Sunday 9th July, he took his first European Challenge Tour title (the Scottish Challenge Tour Championship), having been a 12 year old who was taking on and beating players twice his size. At the England U16s last week, Daniel Bardsley (Moor Hall) did very well firstly by being Top 10 after 36 and then posting a very respectable 307, a few shot behind the (very small) winner Oscar Sharpe from Gloucs.
