The future is brighter with more Boys success
The English Schools Championship 2006 & the Finham Bowl. At the English Schools 2006, at Belton Park GC, there was more success for Warwickshire when Rory Kirwan was awarded a second England Cap after finishing in 10th place. Our County had another player at the event and bar one nine holes, it could have been a fantastic 48 hours for Coventry Finham member Ben Bernamont.
County 6s qualification - The thoughts of your Captain
Its been 6 years since Warwickshire last qualified for the Men's County Finals and 16 since we last won. In that team was a certain G Hargreaves and Graham came away from those three days with 4 points out of 6 - 'I was probably the worst of the 28 players there - there were Internationals everywhere'. How Graham helped Warwickshire that year is much of why we succeeded this and these are the words of your Captain in describing this year's qualification -
U16s - Leicestershire take revenge
Sunday 25th June 2006 - Ingon Manor GC This report comes just 24 hours after the success of our Men's team in qualifying for the 006 County Championship finals. Playing today for Warwickshire, under the guidance of Dick Ferry and Antony Gascoigne, were players who in 8-10 years could be the golfers who represent, and win, for Warwickshire at the highest level. The result, against the County Warwickshire beat by six shots yesterday, was a narrow in for the visitors.
Warwickshire are through - the perfect Centenary present!
County Captain, Graham 'Seve' Hargreaves, knew exactly what had to be done to prepare to win the Midland region qualifying for the 2006 County Finals. He rang Northants GC a year before hand to book the three buggies he wanted and then made sure that everything was there to give his team a chance of success, from the hotel to a number of practice rounds, to cakes and drink - and then he forgot his matches on the day (more later)!
Rory Kirwan - by Peter Ricketts
The Kenilworth Classic was played last week but, despite Kenilworth being his home club, Rory Kirwan could not play in it. He was too busy with A Level exams, which is not the sort of problem faced by many county amateur golf champions. Rory is just 18 and blazed into prominence last weekend by winning the Warwickshire match play title at his first attempt. Then it was back to the exam room at Princethorpe Sixth Form College, Rugby
Our players are blown away
The British Amateur Championships 2006 - Royal St Georges and Princes GC - At around 2pm on the second day of qualifying for the 2006 British Amateur, those players with more than nine holes to play, or yet to start, found their chances of making the top 64 (and thus into the matchplay) taken away by a substantial increase in the wind speed which saw virtually everyone become a victim of unplayable conditions.
