At the third attempt, Rob Steele will play in the British Open this week after rounds of 67 and 69 in the final stage of pre-qualifying when over 380 players tried for just 12 places.
Chris Evans – reaching the Quarters at the English
Chris Evans continued the record of Warwickshire players doing very well at the English Amateur Championship, at the venue for next year’s Walker Cup, the magnificent test of Hollinwell GC in Nottinghamshire. Before Chris, the likes of Rob Steele has been our most recent player to make the end what is a very long week and one of the toughest titles to win – a Championship which is not on the CV of the likes of Gary Wolstenholme.
THE BRITISH BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP 2001
In their last year of Boys Competition, Rob Steele, Warwickshire Boys Captain, and Ben Kruze Midland Schools Champion in 1999 and 200, signed off their Individual Junior Careers with excellent performances at the British Boys. Both reached the 5th round of this Championships which is now one of the hardest to qualify for by handicap ballot, and features the best Juniors from all over Europe.
THE LOGAN TROPHY 2001 - LINDRICK GOLF CLUB
David Fletcher, from Stratford-on-Avon Golf Club, was Warwickshire s only representative in the Logan Trophy for O35 s. His first round of 80 left him well down the field but a second round 72 helped him make the cut (just!). On the final day David shot another 72 for 25th place in a final round field of 51.
