England?s Steve Webster shrugged off a bad back and a large slice of history to take the lead in the first round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship with a superb 65 at Carnoustie - 'I am delighted with the start I have made. I don't think I've ever broken 70 in this tournament so it's a bit of a breakthrough. Let's hope it keeps going,' said Webster.

ST ANDREWS, October 3, 2007 ? The draw for the first round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, which begins tomorrow, has thrown up some enthralling encounters. Open champion Padraig Harrington, winner in 2002 and 2006, has once again been paired with Irish racehorse owner J.P.McManus, with whom he also won the Team Championship in those years, to bid for a remarkable treble.

Carrick to host Cup
One of Scotland's outstanding new golf courses is to host the 24th PGA Cup matches between Great Britain & Ireland and America in two years time. The Carrick at The De Vere Deluxe Resort, Cameron House will stage the club professional's equivalent of the Ryder Cup in 2009 with provisional dates of September 14-20 pencilled in.

GLENBRAE PGA FOURBALL CHAMPIONSHIP supported by Skycaddie. Shropshire golfer Steve Russell had a physiotherapist to thank as he and partner Spencer Edwards qualified for the final of the Glenbrae PGA Fourball Championship, supported by Skycaddie. The pair finished joint top of the Midlands Region qualifier at Leicestershire's Stapleford Park, sharing top spot on seven under with Paul Bagshaw and Craig Swinburn.
